What Really Matters when buying a Laptop? A student guide
Choosing the correct laptop for college can be a very daunting experience, particularly when a budget dictates your choices. It is more than just a computer; it is a primary tool for research, writing, communication, and often, entertainment, with a dizzying array of options, knowing which features to prioritise will ensure you get a reliable device that lasts through your academic year or two, without breaking the bank. Technology and devices require updates so often, in my experience, that where possible they should be replaced every two years if it is financially viable for you to do so.
1. Match Performance to Your Course
The required performance of your laptop hinges heavily on your course of study. A student studying English literature will have vastly different needs than one studying Computer Science or Graphic Design.
- General Use (Arts and Business, Courses): Most students primarily use word processors, web browsers, and streaming services. A mid-range processor (like an Intel Core i5, AMD Ryzen 5, or Apple M-series chip) and 8GB to 16GB of RAM is typically sufficient for smooth multitasking.
- Creative Fields (Graphic Design, Film, Architecture): These courses require heavy-duty software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Blender). You'll need a powerful processor (Core i7/i9, Ryzen 7/9, or Apple M Pro/Max), 32GB of RAM or more, and often a dedicated graphics card (GPU) for rendering and intense visual work.
- STEM/Coding (Computer Science, Engineering): For running Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), virtual machines, and complex simulations, prioritise a strong multi-core processor and 16GB of RAM minimum.
2. Prioritise Portability and Battery Life
College life demands a laptop that can go where you go, from the library to the lecture hall, or the local bar for a collective conversation with friends.
- Portability: Look for a laptop that balances screen size with weight. A 13-inch or 14-inch display strikes a great balance, typically keeping the weight under 3.5 pounds. Larger 15 or 16-inch models are better for students who need more screen space and use a laptop primarily at a desk.
- Battery Life: You will not always have access to a wall socket. Aim for a device that offers at least 8 hours of real-world use on a single charge. This is a crucial feature for all-day classes and study sessions.
3. Essential Specifications Checklist
Don't overlook these core components:
- RAM (Random Access Memory): This allows you to run multiple applications simultaneously. While 8GB is the bare minimum, 16GB is strongly recommended for a modern, frustration-free experience that involves heavy web browsing and multiple programs.
- Storage (SSD): Choose a laptop with an SSD (Solid State Drive), not a traditional HDD. SSDs are dramatically faster and more durable. 512GB is a good starting point, though 1TB may be necessary for students dealing with large media files. You can always supplement with inexpensive cloud storage such as Microsoft OneDrive or iCloud on Apple €8.99 per month for 1TB, or alternatively an external hard drive.
- Display Quality: For extended study hours, a high-resolution, bright display is key. Look for a screen with good colour accuracy and wide viewing angles. OLED or high-quality IPS panels are ideal.
- Keyboard and Trackpad: Since you will be writing thousands of words, test the keyboard for comfort and responsiveness. A comfortable, backlit keyboard is invaluable for late-night study.
4. Operating System and Budget
Your choice of operating system (OS) often comes down to personal preference and course requirements.
- Windows PCs: Offer the widest range of options across all price points and are compatible with nearly all software. They provide flexibility in hardware customisation.
- MacBooks (macOS): Known for premium build quality, excellent performance (especially with Apple's M-series chips), and seamless integration with other Apple devices. They tend to have a higher entry price.
- Chromebooks (ChromeOS): An affordable option best suited for basic tasks done primarily online. They cannot run Windows or macOS-specific software, so confirm compatibility with all your required course applications before buying.
The ideal balance for a reliable college laptop is generally between €500 and €1,200, with specialised or high-end models costing more. Remember to check for student discounts, and software included which are often available directly from manufacturers or retailers.
The college you attend may have a special arrangement with software providers such as Microsoft, where a student can obtain a user licence at a reduced rate or completely free-of-charge via the institution's I.T. department.
A good salesperson will ask specific questions in respect to your requirements and explore all options open to you. Some family-run businesses may even offer to purchase the device back from you after two years, provided a service contract has been honoured by the customer.
A second-hand laptop may be another option, but remember when buying a pre-loved machine it is very often sold as-is, and restored to factory settings, so essentially you can only take the seller’s word for granted and you have - in most cases - no guarantee.
